Japanese studio No.555 Architectural Design Office created the Kre House for a hardcore sport car enthusiast.

Have you ever loved your cars so much you wanted to design a house around them? Well, that’s exactly what Takuya Tsuchida did. His nine-car garage home features a car elevator. An elevator lift brings the favorite car of the moment right into the living room! Due to the space limitations, Tsuchida built the garage as the ground floor and placed a modular living area on top of it. Lamborghini becomes the true centerpiece to this modern home, but the system provides enough flexibility to change that around on a whim.

According to the architects: “The house is located in the high-end residential area. The most remarkable requests in the various clients’ demands are “garage space...

Dutch architectural firm VMX have designed the SODAE house in Amstelveen, The Netherlands. Completed in 2009, the architect who designed this 5,382 square foot, contemporary home on a private island, also lives in it with his family. The island measuring 1200m2. The clever interior layout allows for easy transitions between private and public social functioning and makes the most of its exceptional views.  The living room and kitchen are arranged in a loft-like space on the first floor. The more intimate areas (bedrooms and bathrooms) are situated on the ground floor, orientated towards the garden on the backside. The basement contains an additional programme such as a fitness room and a home cinema. The house forms an object in the landscape; the island acts as the plinth.

A fireplace, a pool, a glass of fine wine, a beautiful panorama and … you simply fall in love with the Barton Creek Residence realized by Cornerstone Architects in Austin, Texas. The house has a harmonious contemporary style that incorporates work from local artists, warm wood custom pieces, a wide range of textures, spectacular light fixtures, luxurious rugs and miles of fabric window treatments. For example, I love the lounge area on the terrace because it is half inside, half outside, letting the inhabitants admire the surroundings while chatting on the sofa, around the fireplace. Moreover, the materials were used in natural colors, making luxury welcoming and inviting. As every designer says, form follows function and being practical does not mean you have to sacrifice luxury.

    ICFF2013-Konstfack-NegativeSpace-1.jpg

Stockholm's Konstfack is among the university design departments that occupy the removed North Building of the Javits Center this ICFF, a more manageable—albeit somewhat sparsely populated—exhibition hall in contrast to the main floor of ICFF. Despite—or perhaps because of—the largely theoretical curriculum of graduate programs in Industrial Design, the 11 first-year Master's candidates at Konstfack undertook a self-initiated project to actually make objects, which they first exhibited during Stockholm Design Week back in February. According to the Negative Space website:

    What is a negative space?
Can it be framed by something other than matter?
Can a negative space be made tangible?
Ten explorations on the possible meanings of negative space showcasing new and intriguing perspectives. By shifting focus from matter to the space that it occupies, the designers have found new ways of working by investigating the relationship between objects and the surrounding space. Presented here are a series of individual interpretations of negative space, culminating in a fascinating interplay between form, memory, movement, light and time.

Insofar as the theme itself is intangible, the students took a broad range of approaches; even in the case of light, which might be considered an easy metaphor for space, the inspiration and execution varied significantly. Nevertheless, the overall aesthetic of the work is quite minimal, in keeping with both the theme and Scandinavian design language...

For the not-so-serious businessman/woman, the Clip Bag playfully borrows its form from a common office item… the binder clip! Constructed of wool felt and aluminum tubing, the bag functions so well you might forget just how clever it is.

The Nenfa lamp takes inspiration from the shape of the lotus flower. The light structure grows from the ceiling, with each “leaf” suspended at a different height. The leaves are spread at random from the core, imitating the flowering pads. Composed of an impressive 21 discs, the lamp illuminates the space by reflecting light from one disc to another, creating multiple shadows. Flat LEDs are hidden in the upper part of the leaves, creating a visual illusion with regards to the source of the light.
