By autonomously navigating the waters surface, Seaswarm proposes a new system for ocean-skimming and oil removal.Seaswarm uses a photovoltaic powered conveyor belt made of a thin nanowire mesh to propel itself and collect oil. The nanomaterial, patented at MIT, can absorb up to 20 times its weight in oil. The flexible conveyor belt softly rolls over the oceans surface, absorbing oil while deflecting water because of its hydrophobic properties. Seaswarm is intended to work as a fleet, or swarm of vehicles, which communicate their location through GPS and WiFi in order to create an organized system for collection that can work continuously without human support. Because they are smaller than commercial skimmers attached to large fishing vessels, they are able to navigate hard to reach places like estuaries and coast lines. Seaswarm works by detecting the edge of a spill and moving inward until it has removed the oil from a single site before joining other vehicles that are still cleaning. Oil is "digested" locally so that Seaswarm does not need to make repeated trips back to shore, which would dramatically slow collection time. The fleet uses cutting edge nanotechnology to solve current environmental problems while envisioning long-term solutions for the future. With a new design strategy we can revive and preserve the quality of our oceans.

Symbiosis: the living together of unlike organism

Another great renovation project, this time by Hokkaido-based architect Jun Igarashi. Located in central Sapporo and completed in November of last year, SYMBIOSIS is a multi-purpose space that is intended to provide close interaction between fashion, jewelry, art and architecture. Or as the German mycologist Heinrich Anton de Bary defined it, “the living together of unlike organisms.”
The 1st floor ground level is a gallery space. The 2nd floor is the FORTUNA boutique, a select shop of clothing and jewelry from France and Italy. The 3rd floor is occupied by jeweler AI KOMORI. All the coll signage and art was by Midorium Design, a frequent collaborator of Jun Igarashi’s.

Studioninedots + HVDN shared with us their winning proposal for the student housing competition for TU Delft Campus. The project parameters were to design a volume of 67 meters long and 5 storeys high, with its own strong identity and a collective space on the roof including a rain water harvesting element. More images and architects’ description after the break.

Along with a collaborative bid of contractor Jan Snel, the winning entry was defining in its dynamic façade, with the collective space having a central location in the building instead of on the roof. This creates a more interactive relationship between the residents, the building and its surroundings, leaving the roof to be fully planted with moss-sedum. The new...

A newly posted review essay for the Chronicle of Higher Education by Jon Christensen, Robert McDonald, and Carrie Denning is a must-read for every urbanist or designer interested in landscape, ecologies, and the intellectual armature of both New Urbanism and Landscape Urbanism. A pull quote to whet your appetite:
We've come a long way from the Roosevelt commission's concern with the "deficiencies" of country life, although the Obama administration recently created a White House Rural Council to "address challenges in rural America." To be sure, we still hear plenty of paeans to that "real America," though only one out of five Americans lives there now, as well as to "wild nature," though most ecologists have come to accept that virtually nothing about nature is untouched by humanity.
The dominant discourse these days, however, unabashedly celebrates the city as the future, in books with titles such as David Owen's Green Metropolis: Why Living Smaller, Living Closer, and Drivi...
